The exact causes of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) are not known but it is believed that the type and relationship of the microorganisms that live in our gut may play a role, together with our immune system’s inability to distinguish between friendly and pathogenic microorganisms.
Dr Indrani Mukhopadhya’s research looks into the role of gut viruses and how they might work with bacteria and fungi to trigger IBD.
