“Florida is always going to be very popular during these long holiday weekends for the beaches, the theme parks, but also the cruise ports South Florida, Central Florida, Tampa that's very popular. Las Vegas is a big Memorial Day destination. Denver has also grown in popularity for these long holiday weekends for people to get out. I think a lot of people also just want to get out in nature, especially post-pandemic. National parks have also seen a rise in tourists. New York City, Boston.”

When we talk about the pandemic again, we're not just talking about pre-pandemic numbers. We are surpassing pre-pandemic numbers. So that tells you a lot about how people are viewing travel these days.”

STORYLINE:
Highways and airports are likely to be jammed this weekend, as Americans head out on Memorial Day weekend getaways.
AAA says this will be the busiest start-of-summer weekend in nearly 20 years. The Transportation Security Administration says there could be 3 million people passing through airport checkpoints on Friday. And that’s just a sample of things to come. U.S. airlines are expecting to carry a record number of travelers this summer. Their trade group estimates that 271 million passengers will fly between June 1 and August 31, breaking the record of 255 million set last summer.
AAA forecasts that 43.8 million travelers will travel at least 50 miles from home between Thursday and Monday. That would be 4% more than the auto club and insurance company predicted last year and nearly match its highest forecast, 44 million in 2005.
Most of those people are expected to travel by car – more than 38 million of them. AAA says its forecasts, done with help from S&P Global, are based on surveys and economic data including employment, household net worth and the stock market. Like those indicators, travel seems to be moving in one direction.
