To begin, turn off the power to the furnace, which supplies electricity to the thermostat. Remove the face of the old thermostat. Detach and label the wires with masking tape. Remove the wall plate with a screwdriver, and then mount the new wall plate. Reattach the wires with their corresponding codes and add batteries if needed. Secure the face of the thermostat to the wall and turn on the power to the furnace. Finally, program the thermostat for times when you are home and away.
