00:00 The Story of Sarah Biffin
07:08 Finding Sarah Biffin
11:18 Alison Lapper
Made to accompany the exhibition "Without Hands": The Art of Sarah Biffin (from 1 November until 21 December, 2022), this film traces the life and art of this remarkable artist and reveals how Philip Mould & Company weaved the pieces of her untold story.
Sarah Biffin (1784-1850) is one of history’s most resolute, entrepreneurial, and accomplished miniature painters, who established a multifaceted artistic profession and challenged contemporary assumptions regarding gender and disability. As a working-class, disabled female artist, her artworks – many proudly signed “without hands” – are a testament to her talent and life-long determination.
This exhibition, established upon ground-breaking primary research, is the first of its kind to present Biffin’s artistic achievements and represent her history.
