According to the theory of the recent African origin of modern humans, the predominantly held belief among most archaeologists is that East Africa is the area where anatomically modern humans first appeared.
The Eastern part of Africa, which is also a part of sub-Sahara Africa, comprises two traditionally recognized regions; East Africa (which is made up of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda) and the Horns of Africa (made up of Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, and Ethiopia. Malawi and Madagascar are sometimes also regarded as East African countries. Their people can be found both in the Eastern and Southern Africa.
Eastern Africa is populated by 160 different ethnic groups or more, depending on the method of counting. Most of the peoples of Eritrea and Ethiopia and some of those in Tanzania and Kenya speak languages belonging to the Cushitic branch of the Afro-Asiatic languages.
