Why do we fear cockroaches?
According to Jeffrey Lockwood, author of “The Infested Mind: Why Humans Fear, Loathe, and Love insects”, there are several reasons why we dislike cockroaches soo much.
The first reason is nurture. In many countries, cockroaches are viewed as disgusting disease carriers and kids are taught to squash them. We see our Mom’s or Dad’s getting all worked up when a cockroach emerges out of a crevice. and whenever someone spots a roach, you will see an almost universal reaction of fear or someone turning into Rambo ready to kill.
And the second reason is that Cockroaches trigger two of the universal negative emotions in humans: fear and disgust. Fear signals danger and disgust is a feeling of revulsion to something potentially contagious or harmful to us.
Getting deeper into this rabbit hole, there are 5 frameworks that have been proposed on why we have an aversive reaction towards cockroaches:
1. The imprecision model
2. Fear first model
3. Aversoin genesis
4. Synergy model
5. Horror model
