Allentown Joe Gans, born Arphelius Hicks, is a boxer who competed in and around the welterweight and middleweight divisions during his time as a pro. He got his namesake by taking on the name of the more famous Old Master Joe Gans, the first ever black lightweight champion of the world and the boxer often regarded as the greatest lightweight of all time. Allentown Joe Gans was one of the toughest competitors of his era and would give much competition a run for their money. There were a number of other Fighting Joe Gans and his name stood out among them.
