“The first thing I did was type ‘generate Black Mirror episode’ and it comes up with something that, at first glance, reads plausibly, but on second glance, is shit,” Brooker said of the technology’s ability to write a script. “All it’s done is look up all the synopses of Black Mirror episodes, and sort of mush them together. Then if you dig a bit more deeply you go, ‘Oh, there’s not actually any real original thought here.’ It’s [1970s impressionist] Mike Yarwood — there’s a topical reference.”

“[It’s] sort of dystopian past, present and future,” Brooker told Empire about the installment. “I had the plot idea first and then, at one point, I thought what if I set this in the late ’60s? That’d be, like, disruptive and cool! And then when you actually come to write it, you realize, ‘Oh, hang on, if this is a different time and everyone in it is from that time, that actually informs how the characters are thinking and behaving.’ But I don’t think there was a deliberate rejection of nostalgia, so much as it was just a fun thing to do.”

Hayek is featured in the episode titled “Joan Is Awful” which follows an average woman that is stunned when she finds out that a streamer has made a show about her life and where she’s portrayed by Hayek. The episode was written by Brooker and directed by Ally Pankiw. Other actors in the episode include Annie Murphy, Ben Barnes, Himesh Patel, Michael Cera and Rob Delaney.

Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker recently sat down with Empire to talk about the new season of techno-horror show (coming to Netflix on June 15), and he dropped a shocking reveal that is more shocking than anything in an actual Black Mirror episode: He tried to get the ChatGPT chatbot to write an episode of Black Mirror, and the end result was “shit.” Wait no, that’s not the shocking thing. Of course something written by AI is going to be shit. The shocking thing is that Brooker didn’t go through with it and actually film the AI-written episode, which could’ve been incredible.

Which leads us nicely into new episode ‘Beyond The Sea’ (exclusively pictured above), starring Aaron Paul, Kate Mara and Josh Hartnett. An impossible mission set in an alternate 1969, it is, Brooker tells us, "sort of dystopian past, present and future.
