NASCAR co-founder Edgar and his wife Nina Otto spent $155,000 to have their deceased dog, Sir Lancelot, cloned. DNA was extracted from their yellow Labrador retriever and frozen in 2004 when they first heard of cloning technology. The cloning was initiated in 2008, when Lancelot was 11 years old and diagnosed with and died from cancer. The procedure was performed by San Francisco firm BioArts and the Sooam Biotech Research Foundation in South Korea. The Florida couple told the TLC program I Cloned My Pet that the new dog, Lancelot Encore, was accepted immediately by their nine other dogs and crosses his paws in the same way Sir Lancelot did.
