“Bile Acid Precursors: Intermediates in Cholesterol Removal or Signalling Molecules?” will be presented by Dr. William J. Griffiths, the 2021 AOCS Schroepfer Medal winner.
Bile acid is primary formed through the hydroxylation of cholesterol; however, other minor pathways to formation exist. William Griffiths and his research team have spent three decades identifying them by studying oxysterols using LC-MS. His presentation will focus on whether minor bile acid biosynthesis pathways have evolved to generate signaling molecules, while also covering new methods of sterol imaging, and unexpected reaction pathways.
