Saint Francis de Sales, former Bishop of Geneva and born on August 21, 1567 in France. He is noted for his deep faith and his gentle approach to the religious divisions in his land resulting from the Protestant Reformation. On June 6, 1610 he was one of the founders of the Women's Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary in Annecy and later established a community of men, an Oratory of St. Philip Neri, at Thonon-les-Bains. He died on December 28, 1622 in France. He was buried on January 24, 1623 in the church of the Monastery of the Visitation in Annecy, which he had founded with Chantal, who was also buried there. Their remains were venerated there until the French Revolution.
Triva:
Protestant Reformation was a major movement within Western Christianity in 16th-century Europe that posed a religious and political challenge to the Catholic Church and in particular to papal authority, arising from what were perceived to be errors, abuses, and discrepancies by the Catholic Church. It was the start of Protestantism and the split of the Western Church into Protestantism and what is now the Roman Catholic Church. It is also considered to be one of the events that signify the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the early modern period in Europe.
