(5 Dec 2018) Female inmates at a prison in Brazil took part in the jail's annual beauty contest on Tuesday.
The event takes place every year at the Talavera Bruce Pentitentiary in Rio de Janeiro.
Hairdressing, makeup, and high nerves all created an environment any beauty contestant in the world would recognize.
The only difference was in this case, win or lose, the contestants were going nowhere afterwards.
It featured dozens of women condemned to remain years behind bars.
For a few hours they had a chance to forget their sadness and isolation.
One of the contestants, 28-year-old Raquel Rodrigues, was jailed almost five years ago, just after her daughter was born.
She says she needs to get out and start her life again so she can be a good mother to her child.
Jail authorities say they organize the beauty contest to encourage self-esteem, fight idleness and promote integration among women prisoners.
This year's winner - Miss Talavera Bruce 2018 - was 25-year-old Veronica Verone.
She was jailed for murder almost eight years ago.
