I seal the inside of my instruments to slow down (not stop) the rate that the wood can absorb and release moisture (humidity) in order to minimize cracks. Quick changes in humidity (and temperature) are the worst wood in regard to cracking issues.
~ This is a very sound technique and common practice for traditional and modern fine furniture makers to seal both sides of table tops (etc) to help stabilise the wood from humidity and cupping.
~ AGAIN- this does not STOP problems associated with humidity (swelling, shrinking- both which cause cracks)---this step is to minimise this as much as I can by slowing down the rate at which the wood can suck in humidity and release it.
~ If cracks do develop, simply sand off the shellac (which is very thin) and glue a cleat as per usual.
