This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, we have a question about a statement on the Bible included in Founders Baptist Church Statement of Faith. The question pertains to the part that speaks of the inerrancy of the Scriptures. Dr. Philpot reads the statement Founders has on the Scriptures and shares that it is because we believe the Word of God to be the final authority on all matters that is the issue. Dr. Philpot says this presupposes God’s Word is without error, hence the word – inerrant. He asks Dr. Richard Caldwell to share why he believes in inerrancy and where does he get this doctrine? Additionally, he asks for a few good resources that would be helpful for people who want to understand this better and be able to clearly articulate this well.
Dr. Caldwell says the Doctrine of Inerrancy is accepted as a matter of faith; there is no way to prove it. At the end of the day, it is a matter of belief. But it is a belief that is firmly grounded. It is the Scriptures themselves that make the claim that the Bible is inerrant. Dr. Caldwell shares 2 Timothy 3:16-17, telling us that when it says inspired by God, the meaning is God-breathed. The Scriptures are breathed out by God. They are the product of God’s own activity. Adding to this passage, we have Psalm 19 and Psalm 119, where the truthfulness of Scripture is celebrated. Also, in these Psalms, we find the usefulness of the Scriptures revealed, along with their authority, and their timelessness.
From the Scriptures, we learn a story. We learn about how man came to exist, his fall, and his need for redemption and salvation. We also learn about God, how He has chosen to save human beings, and how the offer of salvation is extended to human beings. That salvation comes by a Savior, God's own Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, and it is from the Scriptures that we learn about Him and know who He is. The Bible tells us that He is the Eternal Son of God, Jesus of Nazareth, truly God and truly human. It is the Bible that also tells us that God is completely truthful, that He does not lie. So if the Bible is telling us the truth, and it is, says Dr. Caldwell, then we can take what the Lord Jesus Christ says and know that He is absolutely correct in whatever He says. When we read the Scriptures, we find that the Lord believed in the inerrancy of the Scriptures. Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Philpot share Matthew 5:18 and John 17:17, which are direct quotes of Jesus regarding His belief in and of the Scriptures.
Next, Dr. Caldwell says when he considers the message of the Scriptures, comparing them from Genesis to Revelation, he finds that it is absolutely consistent with itself. The Bible comprises 66 books, written over approximately 2000 years by 40 different authors on 3 continents. It deals with all sorts of topics, both negative and positive. The consistency with which it speaks and the truthfulness of the things of which it speaks are evident. It's an amazing testimony to the supernatural testimony of Scripture. And, says Dr. Caldwell, wherever the Bible has been doubted about the things it speaks of, it is also amazing how often, over time, that archeology has confirmed the truthfulness of the Bible.
Dr. Caldwell mentions that when the Founder's Statement of Faith speaks of the inerrancy of the Scriptures, it speaks of the original autographs when the authors of Scripture wrote those things down. God was at work, superintending the process, in and through those authors, so that what they wrote was perfect, perfect in its truthfulness, and perfect in its trustworthiness. The way that God has preserved this for us is really providential. It is no less supernatural but providentially done through an explosion of manuscript evidence. So what was true in the beginning has been kept and preserved through the process of manuscript duplication and then through good comparison work. This is what we are speaking of when we speak of inerrancy. In this way, what we have in our Bibles today is absolutely trustworthy; it is true and pure. Therefore when the Scripture speaks, it is authoritative because God has spoken.
Dr. Caldwell shares a note of caution, telling us that he does not believe that anyone can reject Jesus’ view of the Bible and have a right view of Jesus. If the Jesus that someone believes in was wrong about the Bible, then he, that Jesus, is not God in human flesh.
