"What BMW is that?" asked a curious dog walker as I idled by the roadside taking photos. "It's the regular one," I replied. She looked at it for a second and said, "It's nice." She's right.
Aside from the new beaver-toothed ones, any new BMW is a "nice" car. Anything from a 340i to an X6 M will draw admiring looks from people at gas stations and grocery stores. But when the question lands on what is the best BMW you can buy, the answer usually contains the letter M. But I don't think this is true.
There are no fewer than six different powertrains you can choose on a new BMW 5 Series. The 5 is BMW's "traditional" sedan offering smaller than a 7 but larger than a 3. My tester was one level up from the base 530i, the 540i.
