Modern digital hearing aids are low power computers that you wear behind your ears. A few basic digital signal processing techniques can get you a long way to improving hearing and I wanted to see if I could build such a small thing in a reasonable amount of time. This talk will take you through the basics of a hearing aid, how I went about designing and building the hardware as well as the software side of things using Embedded Rust. My goal with this project is to build something that other software developers can experiment with and to challenge an industry that is dominated by large players and expensive products. Additionally, there is so much potential to do more than use these things for their stereotypical use case and I am excited to share my ideas in this talk.
