West Bengal is preparing for another crucial voting day on May 20 and all eyes are on Howrah, Hooghly, and five other constituencies set to cast their ballots. With just days left until Phase 5 of the Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal, the political landscape is heating up. And in this video, let's talk about Seven of the 42 Lok Sabha constituencies that will go to polls in this phase and the constituencies include Bangaon (SC), Barrackpore, Howrah, Uluberia, Sreerampur, Hooghly, and Arambag.
First let's talk about Barrackpore
In Barrackpore, the BJP candidate Arjun Singh is competing against Partha Bhowmick of the TMC and Debdut Ghosh from the CPI(M), who has Congress support. Singh switched from TMC to BJP five years ago after being denied a nomination by TMC. He won in the 2019 elections under BJP, defeating Dinesh Trivedi.
The second West Bengal constituency is Bangaon In Bangaon, the BJP candidate Shantanu Thakur is competing against TMC's Biswajit Das. In the 2019 elections, Shantanu Thakur of the BJP won the Bangaon constituency by defeating TMC's Mamata Thakur. Now here let's mark few points a ccording to the 2011 Census, the SC and ST communities make up 21.7% and 2.6% of the population respectively whereas Hindus and Muslims constitute 73.46% and 25.82% respectively. So the issue of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) could be a crucial factor in Bangaon, especially for the Matua community, who migrated in large numbers after the partition in 1947.
The third is Howrah- 19 candidates are contesting for the Howrah Lok Sabha constituency. Here is the list right at your screen, In 2019, Prasun Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) won against BJP's Rantidev Sengupta in Howrah.
In Uluberia TMC's Sajda Ahmed is competing against Arun Uday Pal Chaudhary of the BJP and Azahar Mollick of the Congress. In Uluberia, there is an almost equal split between Hindu and Muslim voters. What's interesting is that this constituency is one of the few Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal where the Indian Secular Front (ISF) is contesting.
The fifth is Sreerampore, here In Sreerampore, TMC's Kalyan Banerjee is facing off against BJP's Kabir Shankar Bose.
Historically, the Lok Sabha seat was often contested between the Congress and the CPI(M). However, in 1998 and 1999, it was won by Akbar Ali Khondkar for the TMC, only to be lost to the CPI(M) in 2004.
The last two are Hooghly and Arambagh, In Hooghly Locket Chatterjee from the BJP is competing against Manadip Ghosh of the CPI(M), Mrinal Kanti Das running independently, and Paban of SUCI C
In 2019, Locket Chatterjee from the BJP won the seat with 6 LAKHS plus votes. Dr. Ratna De from the Trinamool Congress came second with 5 lakh 90 thousand plus votes, while Pradip Saha of the CPI(M) secured third place with 1 lakh plus votes
On the other hand in Arambagh, Mitali Bagh from TMC is set to face off against Anup Kanti Digar from the BJP.
So there are the 7 of the 42 lok sabha constituencies in West Bengal which will see action on May 20 till then
