Be sure to watch until the ending credits.
'The French called it Maison Centrale. The locals knew it as Hoa Lo Prison, commonly translated as 'Fiery Furnace'.
The prison was built between the period 1886 to 1901, during the French colonial period. It was intended to hold Viet prisoners, in particular political agitators who were often subject to torture.
Originally intended to hold no more than 400 prisoners, by 1954 it housed as many as 2000 when the French were finally ousted from Indo-China.
With it's heinous, subhuman living conditions, stocks, solitary confinement, instruments of torture and execution, Hoa Lo Prison became a symbol of the brutality of colonialism, to explore, conquer, settle and exploit.
The following scenes are only a glimpse of the true horrors behind the walls. The stories they tell are more tragic still...'
