Come and join me on an educational fly fishing trip to Cold Water Lake Mount Saint Helens! Coldwater Lake is a barrier lake on the border of Cowlitz County and Skamania County, Washington in the United States. The lake was created during the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, which blocked its natural outlet, Coldwater Creek, with volcanic debris. It is one of several lakes in the area that were created or otherwise enlarged by the eruption. Washington State Fish and Wildlife planted the lake with Rainbow Trout from the Cowlitz hatchery in 1983. Since then, the lake has sustained it's population of nicely sized trout - which include Rainbow, Westslope Cutthroat and native Sea-run Cutthroat Trout. The trout range from 8" to the occasional 20+ inch monster - average is about 15". The lake is home to Loons, Lake Otters, Elk, Deer, Cougar, Black Bear, Coyotes, Osprey and Bald Eagles...just to name a few. It truly is a special place to visit and fish!
