The 1948 ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians was a crime against humanity, but is seen by many today as an unexplained human catastrophe at best, and a self-inflicted disaster at worst. The denial of the crime allowed Israel since to try and complete the transformation of Palestine from
an Arab country to a Jewish state. The result is the ongoing systematic abuse of Palestinian human rights that has implications for the future of the region as a whole. Recognition of the crime, assuring accountability and bringing a moral, legal and political closure are the three preconditions without which there will be no peace and reconciliation in Israel and Palestine.
