This is the first video in a 2-part series on the lifetime of the tau lepton. Here, we talk about the motivation for wanting to measure the lifetime of the tau lepton and the basic experimental method of doing the measurement. We very briefly review the quark and lepton content of the Standard Model of Particle physics and discuss how the lifetime of the tau lepton can be an important test of lepton universality. We then discuss how the tau lifetime is measured in particle collider experiments.

we look at the experimental results and how they changed as experiments became increasingly precise. This can teach us important lessons about measurement error and how scientific knowledge evolves with time.
