Around 1233, a tower was built on a rock 60 metres above the valley of Hoyoux. It was then extended and rebuilt in the following centuries. The current appearance of the castle was achieved in the 17th century, after being rebuilt following a wartime fire in 1651. In French style. This makes the castle one of the few examples of that style in Belgium. Since 1941, the 450 hectares of the castle grounds have been owned by a public water company, which has been investing a great deal of time and effort in restoring the castle and grounds. The castle is accessible and some 20 rooms can be visited. In the outbuildings, a hotel and a conference centre can be found.
