STORYLINE:
A dozen countries ranging from Iran to the United Kingdom began a simulated operation on Monday against an imaginary chemical weapons attack at a Croatian airport.
The weeklong exercise, conducted by the international Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), is intended to help evaluate the agency's level of preparedness for a real chemical attack.
Some 300 people from 12 countries in the 145-member organisation will participate in Operation ASISTEX-1, using 40 different kinds of vehicles, three transport planes, a helicopter and approximately 100 tonnes of equipment.
The exercise in the coastal city of Zadar involves a simulated terrorist attack on an international airport, in which unknown chemicals are released in several terminals and outlying areas, posing a threat to surrounding settlements.
During the operation, at the Zemunik airport on the mid-Adriatic Sea, local authorities have been working closely with the OPCW, which provides international assistance ranging from detection and decontamination to rescue and protection of civilians.
O-P-C-W spokesperon, Peter Kaiser said "....
Nations taking part in the drill alongside Croat personnel are Austria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Iran, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
The OPCW was established in 1997 under an international treaty signed by 145 nations. Its main task is to ensure the verification and destruction of chemical weapons and to provide protection and assistance against the chemical threat.
