Richard Jones continues his tour of the Jack the Ripper murder sites in 2016 with a visit to Hanbury Street where the body of Annie Chapman was found in the backyard of number 29 at 6am on 8th September 1888.
At the time of her murder, Annie was staying at a Common Lodging House on Dorset Street. But, in the early hours of the 8th September she lacked the paltry sum of fourpence to secure her bed and was, therefore, ordered to leave.
This video tour, therefore, begins opposite where the entrance to Dorset Street once stood and shows the thoroughfare as it looks in 2016 and as it would have looked in 1888.
We then move on past the soaring bulk of the church tower of Christchurch, Spitalfields and pass the Ten Bells Pub where, some press reports stated that Annie had been seen drinking shortly before her murder. This footage is overlaid with old photographs that show this section of the road as it would have been in Victorian times.
We then turn into Hanbury Street and walk along it, showing it as it is today and ans it was in 1888.
the tour pauses outside the site of number 29 Hanbury Street and, again using old photographs, helps recreate what the site would have been like in the 19th century.
There is also a look at some of the street art that has appeared around the site in the last few years.
All in all, this provides an intriguing look at the London of Jack the Riper then and now.
