I think Metro Exodus is a fantastic game on all counts, and it was really one of my favorites this gen. The world felt so genuine and the exploration was so good that it reminded me of happy memories with games like Skyrim and Fallout. The only thing I find I regret about the game is the lack of gameplay in the Metro, for which the series is named. There are some segments that do the environment justice, but few levels in which you get to explore a living Metro experiencing problems and hearing stories, making everything feel a little bit more alive inbetween the oppressive hike through scary tunnels. One could say we already got two games exploring the Moscow Metro, but I still felt like something was missing in Exodus, that familiar feeling.
The Two Colonels DLC adds a little more of that feeling back into the game. You definitely should finish the main game first so if you haven't, stop reading. The DLC is a linear mission set as a progression of areas following Kirill's father and the events leading to the collapse and death of the Novosibirsk Metro. You get to use the flamethrower to burn through a spooky segment of tunnels, and then you see what life was like in this version of Metro all over again; a community surviving in the worst possible situation. You get great world building, a shooting segment, and then an endgame slog that feels hopeless, just as it should be. It accomplishes pretty much everything I'd like from a standalone DLC mission, and gives Miller a chance to fill in the gaps where Artyom didn't experience his side of the Novosibirsk mission. It's really great. The only thing I'm not sure about is the length of the mission. It took me about three hours to go through, which is pretty long for a single mission, and yet for a DLC it may or may not be enough for you. There is not much replayability either, as it's mostly a linear story DLC. If that length and premise sounds about right and you love Metro and Stalker like I do, check it out.
