The early progression in Dubai gained it the traction that arrived decades later among other Arab nations. Besides becoming a popular tourist destination, over time people started seeing Dubai as a new place to invest into businesses and real estate, taking advantage of the tax haven that the UAE is
However, this not only served as an opportunity to industrialists and entrepreneurs, but also mafias and gangsters. Dubai has earned itself a reputation of providing safe haven to all kinds of people including, druglords human traffickers and gangsters looking to launder their illicit money through trade and investment
The Gulf city attracted some of Europe’s top traffickers including high profile cocaine kingpins such as the likes of Daniel Kinahan, Ridouan Taghi, Raffaele Imperial and Edin Gacanin, who chose the seven-star attraction of Dubai, Burj Al Arab hotel to come together and discuss ‘bu siness’ in 2017
However, little did they know that a few years later the US Drug Enforcement Agency would be on to them. Two of the drug kingpins were arrested by law enforcement agents while the other two became targets of DEA. By 2022, prison walls were what surrounded Taghi and Imperiale while despite being fleeing the authorities.
Kinahan and Gacanin were still imprisoned within their own luxurious prison following the lack of accessibility of their bank accounts and its funds due to financial sanctions imposed by the US Treasury. One of the senior intelligence officials from Europe who spoke on the condition of anonymity claimed that the continued use of hawala system of banking has largely contributed to the Emirate becoming an attractive hub for criminals like Daniel Kinahan and the likes, who launder their drug money in the tax haven
This isn’t the first incident of its sort to have happened or the first of criminals to be caught in the act in fact, the breeding ground Dubai offers such people has resulted in the escalation of crime in the country.
Despite ranking as one of the safest countries for women travellers the country has subjected women to not only rape, but injustice too, served in the form of imprisonment for illicit sex on reporting their rape It goes to show how crooked law enforcement is in the United Arab Emirates, where on one hand. Dubai keeps criminals like Daniel Kinahan safe and charges raped women with imprisonment.
