You do need to have 360 days (4 hours count as a day) sea time (90 hours in the last 3 years) on the water driving a motor boat in order to qualify to take a Boat Captain license written exams.
(1) 360 hours sea time. (90 hours in last 3 years) - you can count your rental motor boat time, electric motor canoe and kayak time (I used it for my application),
(2) physical tests including vision and hearing tests.
(3) Drug tests needs medical doctor to certify results
(4) CPR and First Aid training certificate
(5) Pay and get TWIC card for background check
This video I show you the Captain In a Box OUPV-6pack (Deluxe Version includes hard copy books, LI sound map, parallel ruler, divider, 2 pencils, eraser, and pencil sharpener. You can buy the digital version and (1) LI sound map (2) divider (most students have it already from middle school or high school) (3) parallel ruler to save a little. No need to buy the hard copy books - I didn't study the books in order to pass the Coast Guard Captain OUPV (Operator of Uninspected Passengers Vessel) 6-pack exams.
The most difficult part of the 4 modules of the CharterBoat Captain License is the "Chart Plotting" which involves 10 questions. You need 70% to pass. Most people fail this module.
My tips for taking Coast Guard written exams and ace it:
1.Memorize the online modules questions and answers (daymarks, lights, horns, TVMDC etc.)
2.Repeat online questions at least 3 times.
3.Familiar yourself with Long Island Sound chart map for (1) inlets, (2) rivers, (3) lighthouse, (4) footnotes, (5) symbols on the map.
4.Do not panic if you see the questions NOT in the online course. I saw 2 or 3 out of 10 questions (70%+ to pass) on the final module (chart plotting) so got nervous. Tip: Just skip it and come back to do it later. Do circle back to check ALL the answers at least once before submitting the final results to the exam Proctor.
5.Take the master captain license instead of the OUPV 6-pack. Why?
1.Take more than 6 paying passengers
2.Can go 200 miles offshore instead of 100 miles
