Longplay / playthrough / walkthrough of AM2's The King of Route 66, had to employ some tricks to work around the issues with Demul we encountered. The King of Route 66 is the sequel to 18 Wheeler: American Pro trucker and improves on the original in just about every area. The arcade hardware even has it's own Citizens band mic for use in the game.
The King of Route 66 is about three times the size of the original, with the game seeing you drive the length of route 66. The game is broken down into three area each made up of a number of stages. There's also a few cutscenes that show the truckers Lizard Tail and Big Foot up to no good as always. New features for Route 66 include the CB radio, truck convoys, nitro boost and a new scoring system around collectable badges.
Just like the original the aim is to get to the goal as fast as possible, beating your rival for a score bonus. The graphics hold up well even now and the game managed to deliver the feel of you controlling a huge 18 wheeler truck very well. However, it appears to have a limited arcade release and very few gamers likely saw this in the arcades.
In fact most gamers will likely be more aware of the PlayStation 2 home release. There's just one problem with that, in the fact that the PS2 release doesn't include the original arcade version. Instead it has its own take on the arcade version. Truth be told we found the arcade version the better playing game as you aren't forced to have to beat the rival truckers as in the PS2.
Our editor Riven provides some commentary on some of the changes in this version versus the PS2 and some of the issues with Demul. Note as the capture went on more pop up started to occur this was no due to the stress on our system during capture, it doesn't occur normally. Due to an issue with deceleration and braking that triggers the end of a stage early. Riven had to play the game with the accelerator held down at all time, including the trailer link up scene, which cause him to crash into every one. After some extra practice swapping between between drive and reserve it's possible to reduced the damage, but not totally. If you don't do this the game will soft crash and bring up a black screen until the timer runs out.
If you want a video with no commentary please let us know, ideally, however, we would like to produce one when the game is working 100% on Demul. In order to get the best out of the game and to get it running on Demul you must turn off the Motor Power option in the test menu and we also suggestion turning off CB-Mic, so you can use the mic features via button presses. The Nitro chances work in-game by hitting the horn and the nitro start button for a free boost, if the CB-Mic is turn off.
