Tiago Outeiro, PhD, University Medical Center Göttingen, Göttingen, Germany, shares the findings of a study investigating the role of RNA in synapse physiology and neurodegeneration in models of Parkinson’s disease. The study aimed to identify microRNAs associated with synaptic processes linked to synapse degeneration. Deregulated microRNAs were identified and validated. It was found that some proteins involved in synaptic function were changing due to the accumulation of alpha-synuclein. Further investigations will continue to assess the role of RNA-based processes in synapse degeneration, which could lead to new targets for therapeutic interventions in synucleinopathies.
