In US news, hate groups and white supremacy are on the rise in the United States. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) says Donald Trump and the White House are to blame for this increase in hate group and hate crime activity among white supremacists, white nationalists, and groups like the Ku Klux Klan.
More hate groups are active in the U.S. today than ever before. There’s been a 30% increase in hate groups over the last 3 years according to The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). 58.1% of hate crimes reported in 2017 were racially motivated.
More than 50% of reported hate crime offenders in 2017 were white, according to a report by the Department of Justice. Between 2017-2018, white nationalist groups increased by almost 50%.The report attributes the 30% increase in hate groups in part to President Trump.
Heidi Beirich, director of the SPLC’s Intelligence Project: 'The numbers tell a striking story – that this president is not simply a polarizing figure but a radicalizing one. Rather than trying to tamp down hate, as presidents of both parties have done, President Trump elevates it – with both his rhetoric and his policies. In doing so, he’s given people across America the go-ahead to act on their worst instincts. Trump has given voice to the rage and paranoia of white supremacists, and now there is a very real danger that as extremists lose the hope they saw in his presidency, some will lash out against the people he has demonized and blamed for America’s problems.'
The SPLC estimates 40 people were killed by ‘radical right’ attacks in 2018. The Department of Justice has yet to release hate crime statistics for 2018. But in 2017, law enforcement reported 8,437 hate crime incidents. More than half were racially motivated followed by religion and sexual orientation.
Black nationalist groups also increased between 2017 to 2018. From 233 chapters to 264. According to the SPLC, these groups are often anti-Semitic, anti-LGBT and anti-white.
Heidi Beirich: 'Hate has frayed the social fabric of our country. Knitting it back together will take the efforts of all segments of our society – our families, our schools, our houses of worship, our civic organizations and the business community. Most of all, it will take leadership – political leadership – that inspires our country to live up to its highest values.'
