Mo Rocca meets with Chief Curator Marc Greuther to learn about inspired lighting technology after Thomas Edison's invention of the light bulb.
In the late 1800s, big cities used arc lighting to illuminate large areas. Since most homes were not hardwired for electricity until the 1920s, it was the commercial spaces and businesses that implemented new, innovative ways to generate light.
Fluorescent lights were created in the 1930s for commercial use, and later became popular following World War II.
In the early 1960s, LED bulbs were invented, but did not become popular until decades later due to a high manufacturing costs.
