10. Chileans are the second biggest consumers of bread in the world - just behind the Germans. No wonder, considering how unbelievably delicious the different types of bread are, such as the popular marraqueta loaves.
9. The Gran Torre in Santiago - a staggering 64 stories high - is the tallest building in South America. Head up to the newly opened observation deck for an amazing view of the city and the surrounding Andean cordillera.
8. The Atacama Desert is the driest desert in the world, with average rainfall measuring about 0.6 inches a year. There are some places in the Atacama that have never even registered rainfall since recording began. But when the rains do come, parts of the desert bloom with beautiful fields of purple flowers that stretch for miles.
7. Chile is the world's 5th largest exporter of wine and the 7th largest producer. As Argentina is famous for its Malbec, Chile is famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon.
6. The Andes mountains trace the entire length of the country, covering approximately 80% of its land. As a result, only 3.8% of Chile’s land is arable.
5. Easter Island, famous for its moai statues, is geographically Polynesian but officially belongs to Chile. Located 2,000km east of Pitcairn and 3,700km to the west of Chile, it is one of the most remote communities in the world.
4. There are approximately 90 active volcanoes in Chile. Cerro Arul, Cerro Hudson, and Villarrica – composite volcanoes, sometimes called stratovolcanos – are three of its most active and therefore most closely monitored. Chile is also home to the world’s highest historically active volcano: Ojos del Salado which stands at 6,893m.
3. The world’s biggest swimming pool is at San Alfonso del Mar Resort in the Chilean city of Algarrobo. It is over 3,323ft in length, covers an area of 20 acres and has a maximum depth of 115 feet. It holds 66 million gallons of water and costs over $3 million USD a year to maintain.
2. One of the most scenic places on earth is the Chilean Patagonia area that measures 240,000 square kilometers. Apparently, the area has a population density of 1 person per square kilometer and thus 50 percent of the area is classified as Wild Protected Area.
1. Chile is the world’s longest country from north to south measuring at 4,620km. It extends across 38 degrees of latitude but is only 150km wide from west to east.
