As flood waters engulfed Silchar town in Assam’s Cachar district, the Indian Army has been deployed to carry out relief and rescue operations on Monday. Water from the Barak river entered the town due to the damages to the Bethukandi embankment. The river on Monday was flowing above the danger level of 19.93 metres and was recorded at 21.84 metres. Several low-lying areas of Silchar were flooded with waist-deep water. Meanwhile, Cachar Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli requested the people to shift to high land areas.
“Water has been entering every home in the town. Water is also sipping in through the surrounding areas of the town. I want to request the public not to panic. As the water is increasing, please shift to the high land areas. All our rescue teams and relief teams are fully operational. Every flood-affected village will get relief. I request you not to panic. And whatever is possible, please help each other to make it to the high land areas. Our NDRF, SDRF, Army, BSF, and CRPF boats are deployed. Lots of requests are coming in and we’ll evacuate everyone. Just help each other in whatever way possible. My second request is to the community leaders especially. We have a lot of NGOs and rich people in our Silchar town. Based on humanity, and without considering religion and caste, please help each other,” said Jalli
