Vít Jedlička (LL), President of the Free Republic of Liberland
Topic Leader: Stephen Sackur (GB), Presenter HARDtalk, BBC News
Liberland, officially the Free Republic of Liberland, is a micronation claiming a parcel of disputed land on the western bank of the Danube river, between Croatia and Serbia. It was first pro-claimed on 13 April 2015 by Czech right-libertarian politician and activist Vít Jedlička. In this One-on-One session we are going to challenge the idea of setting up a new state with an area of just 7km2. With hundreds of thousands of applications for citizenship, the question of the so-called state’s real intentions is obvious: Are we looking at the future model of (partially virtual) nations or is this just another tax haven?
