Andy Lim, MBBS, Monash University, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, shares the findings of a new meta-analysis assessing 90-day stroke recurrence rate in minor stroke. Minor stroke is generally defined as a National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) of 5 or less. Little is known regarding the optimal evaluation and treatment of these patients, as they are often excluded from therapeutic trials. To begin to address the unknowns in this patient population, Dr Lim’s team conducted a meta-analysis of all randomized controlled trials and observational studies that included a minor stroke cohort. The 90-day stroke recurrence rate was calculated as 8.4%. This research opens up many possibilities for further exploration of optimal work-up, acute treatment, and secondary prevention for patients with minor stroke.
