what is piston speed
most common speed is average piston speed also called "mean" piston speed.
this is the average speed of the piston from TDC to BDC. Why average bcause the piston is standing still on tdc and bdc and will accelerate to about half way up the bore and will the slow down again and standing still on tdc and will the accelerate down again
the lenght of the stroke and the engine speed will have a lot of inlfuence on the piston speed
if you look at industrial diesel engine the can have very long stroke lenght but run at low rpm
when you look at F1 and high rpm motorbike engines that run up to 20.000 rpm the stroke is very short to keep the piston speed low at these high engine rpm peak
formula for mean piston speed:
MPS= 2 X Stroke X RPM / 60
MPS= in Meter per seco
stroke= lenght in cm
60= to convert from min to sec
piston speed most common:
diesel automotive engine's: 14 m/s
petrol average normal automotive engines: 16 m/s
High performance automotive street engines: 20-25 m/s
F1 and race car engine's: 25 m/s
Top fuel dragsters: 30 m/s
At high piston can increase power at high rpm because there is more heat and engery in the molecules due to fast compression. and in a engine heat is power.
but at higher speed and temperatures there is more friction and wear on the parts in the bore and around the piston. also the time to inject and burn fuel during ignition is less because the piston is moving faster so fuel efficiency is lower
