"I Surrender", written by former Argent guitarist Russ Ballard, was first released in 1980 by Head East. A year later, Rainbow recorded and released it a single from their album, "Difficult To Cure". Originally, background vocals were recorded by Graham Bonnet (who sang lead on "Since You've Been Gone", another song penned by Ballard), but after he left the band, the song was re-recorded with Joe Lynn Turner (Bonnet's replacement) handling the lead and background vocals.
English heavy metal band Praying Mantis was originally in the running to release the song and even recorded the backing track and just when they were ready to add the lead vocals, when they were told to stop because Rainbow was considered the bigger named act, so Rainbow got the nod to record and release the song.
"I Surrender" was a big hit on the UK Singles chart, making it to #3. The song was also a Top 5 hit in Ireland, reaching #4. In the US, "I Surrender" didn't achieve bigger success, failing to make to Billboard Hot 100, but did peak at #105 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart. It fared better on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, peaking at #19.
This is the single 45 version. If you're a fan of Rainbow or 80's rock in general, then this deserves a listen.
