(10 Apr 2019) European heads of state and leaders of EU institutions came together in Brussels on Wednesday ahead of the European Council meeting taking place that evening.
The centre-right European People's Party (EPP) brought together the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
In another corner of Brussels, the Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel hosted a mini-summit with several European politicians, including the Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and French President Emmanuel Macron.
"This is a meeting to strengthen the unity of the European Union by ensuring that member states that are at the forefront of politics," said Michel.
He added that the meeting aimed to "reduce the negative impacts of Brexit."
Britain's withdrawal from the European Union was the main item on the agenda, with European leaders expected to decide by the end of the day how long a Brexit extension to give British Prime Minister Theresa May.
