Istanbulites likes stray animals very much. Foundations and hospitals were established for the care, feeding and treatment of stray animals in the Ottomans.

Jean de Thevenot, the French Eastern traveler who visited Istanbul in 1655, wrote in his memoirs:

"Some people leave their property before their death to feed the dogs and cats several times a week. To fulfill this will, they leave their money to the baker or butcher who does so in a reliable and pious manner."

Today, many people in Istanbul keep cats and take them to the vet when they get sick.

You can see cats all over Istanbul. Therefore, Istanbul is the cat capital of the world.
