The Flame Box Crab, Calappa flammea, can be difficult for divers to spot because it spends much of its time buried in the sand. Divers approaching a Flame Box Crab in the open usually make it feel threatened. If divers watch carefully, the crab will dance and wiggle its way backwards under the sand. These small crabs entertain divers in the Dominican Republic and throughout the Caribbean, and can be identified by the reddish-brown, web-like patterns on their ivory shells. This specific Flame box crab was found in Curacao.
