For nearly twenty years I've thought of how cool it would be to be able to play Dizzy's "Shaw 'Nuff" and be able to play both Diz and Bird's solos. Well, turns out I had a good excuse finally to do so! In February, 2017, I'll be performing an all Dizzy Gillespie tribute show as part of the PDX Jazz Festival and I decided to include "Shaw 'Nuff" among many other tunes from 1945 to focus on for the show, so I figured it couldn't hurt...well, maybe just my brain.
In this video, I demonstrate the culmination of about 5 hours of work and then show about 4 1/2 hours of the work itself...the idea of documenting the process came to me after I had already begun transcribing the head and some of Bird's solo. I've had students tell me "why don't you make a video showing how you transcribe"...so, here it is! Its long...but that IS the reality of transcribing...it is work! Even if you don't watch the entire video, just know that the minute or so of playing upfront was proceeded by many hours of work...and the work doesn't stop there...once you "get it" then you need to test yourself repeatedly over the next days and make sure its still there ;)
