Some babies do experience constipation when they eat ragi porridge or ragi based foods. It stops when they switch back to rice/wheat or their cereals. Yes there is a valid reason why this happens especially with Ragi.
Ragi has 3-4X more fibre than rice based cereals. This high fibre (soluble fibre content) also needs a lot of water to be digested well.
The video explains how "Soluble Fibre" is like a piece of cotton that soaks up all the water. Similarly, since Ragi has high fibre content, it soaks up more water in the digestive tract.
Hence, if the following happens:
1. Weather very hot and baby is dehydrated
2. Baby has not consumed enough water on that day
3. Breastfeeding mom has not consumed enough water, hence breast milk is thicker and is not hydrating the baby enough.
This applies to all high fibre foods. Its important that we consume enough water when we eat more millets like ragi. And soon you will notice that the side effects are gone :-)
So dont blame the grain. Lets just learn the science behind it and how to tackle the issues :-)
