As Dr. Walton Curl, orthopedic surgeon at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, explains, a knee arthroscopy is a type of knee surgery that is less invasive than other kinds of knee surgeries.
In an arthroscopic surgery, the surgeon makes small incisions around the knee through which a small camera and surgical instruments reach the joint. The surgeon can repair the cartilage and/or meniscus, reconstruct ligaments, remove damaged tissue or simply inspect the joint to see if additional treatment or surgery is needed.
When the surgery is scheduled, the physical therapy that will follow the surgery is also scheduled. The physical therapist guides the rehabilitation, depending on the symptoms of the patient and the surgical findings. In general, a patient can expect to be up and moving within two to three days and possibly back to regular activities within two to three weeks.
