MASS APPEAL by Bill C. Davis premiered on 20 February.
Recently revised and updated, this play has been a hit with audiences ever since its New York premiere in 1980. Later made into a movie starring Jack Lemmon, the play concerns the conflict between a fiery young candidate for the priesthood who would like to reform the Catholic Church, and an older priest who has made a comfortable life for himself within the institution. The young man passionately challenges the traditional views on celibacy, and the ordination of women and homosexuals as priests. When he reveals his bisexual past, his own ordination is thrown into question. But it is the young man's stand against the authority of the church itself that may ultimately cut off his career. MASS APPEAL "...entertains but also educates." (The Hollywood Reporter)
