Separated from US Marine sergeant Chris Scott, Kim still holds out hope and certainty that their love will continue once Chris returns to Vietnam for her and takes her to America. Meanwhile, Chris has already married an American named Ellen. In their bedroom Chris wakes from a dream calling out Kim's name, and Ellen tries to comfort him while not knowing about his past with Kim. Both women remain strong in their devotion to Chris, not realizing that neither of them could have have his full devotion in return.
