RF6 TV stations operating primarily for FM radio on 87.7 are known by the FCC as "FM6" operations. By law, these stations have to utilize their entire 6MHz channel. NTSC broadcasts were mandated by the FCC to cease operations as of July 13, 2021 (excluding Alaska). This was a challenge for FM6 operators as their listeners were used to tuning their FM dial to 87.7 FM. Many FM6 operators had decades of branding surrounding their 87.7 placement. The compromise (as of now) is to operate a hybrid ATSC 3.0 and FM station within the 6MHz RF6 channel under STA with the FCC.
