Do you have an old 27" iMac from 2009 and You know it's not worth much to sell it but it still Functions just fine! Well that's the exact same position I found myself in. I wanted to come up with a solution to utilize my iMac and not have it be a giant paper weight. I'm also pretty attached to my Macs and id rather just keep them than sell them.
In this video you will see how Purchasing a $15.00 Cable from Amazon gave my old Imac a new life purpose! It's very easy, quick and straight to the point.
We will Turn Our 2009 - 27" iMac into an external Display using our 15" Macbook Pro! No need to invest in a new Monitor that can be costly when you already have one.
If this video helped you I would LOVE to know please leave me a comment below.
Model Number for 2009 27" iMac is A1312
Model Number for Late 2018 Macbook Pro 15.5" is A1990
UPDATED INFO: As of Jan 2nd 2021. Back in Nov, I Updated to Big Sir on my 16" 2018 Mac book Pro and using the 27" Imac as an External Monitor, everything still works fine and exactly like I showed in the video. It might have a little more Lag going from the black screen to showing up on the I-Mac but give it a good Minute to connect before you pull the plug. Other than that no changes at all.
Also I just purchased the 13” MacBook Pro with M1 chip and works perfect. In fact it’s super smooth and way quicker than my 15” MacBook connecting to the display. New video coming ASAP!
Also please take note this will NOT work with 21.5" or 24" Imacs those Imacs might have the display port but they are not Equipped with the “target Display mode” built in, and from what I can tell anything before 2009 has a different port on the backside. So without that Feature you can not access the plug and play option like a show in the video.
Also I just want to reiterate the way I show this working in my video is for a LATE 2009 27" I-mac with the “target Display mode” Built in. This way does NOT require you to use the Cmd F2 option, in fact that will NOT work with my model of computer. I'm sure this works with other Models and how they were configured. All you need to do is follow the instructions in the video and it's plug and play no special requirements.
Thanks to everyone that has watched my Video and commented and I am Super glad I was able to help several people! If I have helped you please let me know if the comments below. Also don't forget Amazon links to the Cable are included below as well. They are affiliate links and thank you for helping to support and Grow my Chanel.
