Throughout the American Civil War, there was a prisoner of war camp which was known for its horrific treatment of prisoners and inmates. Camp Sumter was referred to as 'hell on earth,' and it held captured Unionist soldiers. But the inmates suffered heavily with starvation and a lack of food and also disease swept through the site killing thousands. The sanitation inside Andersonville was horrific also, which also helped to spread disease and people were suffering greatly.
It was estimated that each day 100 people were dying, and prisoners were so desperate to get out that they even tried to fake death so that guards would remove them from the camp. The Commandant was Henry Wirz who claimed he tried to make things better, but he was actually executed for his crimes because of the conditions of Camp Sumter.
