In the summer of 2021 we did this hike to celebrate the 20th anniversary of our engagement!
Mount Elbert is the highest peak in the Rocky Mountains of North America, located in Lake County, Colorado. Standing at an elevation of 14,440 feet (4,401 meters), it is also the second-highest peak in the contiguous United States after Mount Whitney in California.
Mount Elbert is named after Samuel Hitt Elbert, who was the governor of the Colorado Territory from 1873 to 1874. The peak is a popular destination for hikers and mountaineers, with several trails leading to the summit. The standard route is a well-maintained trail that starts at the Mount Elbert Trailhead, which is accessible by car.
The mountain offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including nearby peaks, forests, and valleys. Wildlife such as bighorn sheep, elk, and marmots can be spotted along the way. Mount Elbert is also known for its harsh and unpredictable weather conditions, with sudden storms and extreme temperatures common throughout the year. Climbers should be well-prepared and experienced before attempting to summit this iconic peak.
