SPOILER ALERT! The Martian is an incredible movie but it still has mistakes! Here's 10 mistakes of science that we found in 'The Martian' (...but it's still an awesome movie and you should totally go see it!)
1. The crew's evacuation from Mars is caused by a huge storm.. Mars does have winds, its atmosphere is barely 1% of the density of Earth’s, meaning even if the winds were 100 miles per hour, the force would be the same as 1 mile per hour on Earth.
2. A huge part of the movie is about Watney trying to make water – he blows himself up trying to do it. But the Curiosity Rover just found a ridiculous amount of water stored in the soil of Mars. So all this dangerous stuff that had to do to generate water—he could have just brought dirt in and heated it up!
3. The air pressure on Mars is so low that the water in his mouth and lungs would almost instantly boil as soon as his suit depressurizes after he’s hit with the antenna. Yet somehow the suit is 'plugged' by his blood and the metal bar? Remember blood is made of water - so warm blood would turn into steam and disappear upon contact with the air of Mars.
4. He was like ‘meh shovel so heavy’, ‘everything so heavy’... But everything would have been super light on Mars - he would have been like a Space Monster, super strong!
5. When a pod on Watney’s station blows up, he patches the hole super futuristic plastic tarp and duct tape. That might actually be enough to do the job, given the atmosphere on Mars. But remember, air pressure on Mars is so low, plus the Mars in the movie has huge wind storms so... unlikely.
6. There’s a lot of radiation in space. On Earth, we’re protected by our atmosphere. Mars doesn’t have much of an atmosphere, so Whatney’s stay on Mars would have exposed him to like 100 times the amount of radiation that is considered safe for a nuclear plant worker.

Even if future NASA have magically built the suit and the shelter to be somehow radiation resistant, unlikely, as mentioned before one of the walls of his shelter is made of plastic tarp. So luckily the movie ended on day one back at NASA becase on Day 2 he gets diagnosed with fatal cancer and dies.
7. Average temperature on earth 57 F / 14 C. Average temp on mars is -80 or -61 c. But he somehow survives - insulated by a plastic tarp.
8. Mars Gravity is just over 1/3 of earth, so whilst he would have been instantly a lot lighter – his cardiovascular and muscular systems would be fucked.
9. Whether a Martian castaway would have all of the oxygen Watney did for his long stay is… questionable. The six person crew was to remain on the surface for 30 days, meaning that a single person would have at least enough air for 180 days. But Watney was there fore over 500 days, so… it’s doubtful he would have had enough.
10. There’s this big scene where Donald Glover explains “gravity assist” to Jeff Daniels head of NASA, who has never heard of this idea before. That’s like a lawyer having never heard of the 5th amendment.
11. This whole movie is a lot more believable is Watney is actually MacGyvers. Because he seems to fix literally everything with a seemingly all prevalent and never ending supply of Duct tape. Very macgyver. He also performs actual rocket surgery an extensive refit of his escape rocket, with no tools. That’s not a science point that’s just like, damn that guy is actually macgyver!
But the main point here is - it's an awesome movie. Go watch The Martian!
